Understanding the OODA Loop

Observe → Orient → Decide → Act

The OODA Loop describes the decision-making cycle in combat. Your total reaction time includes sensory lag (60-80ms), processing time (variable), and motor output (30-100ms).

Hick's Law: RT = a + b·log₂(n)

Choice Reaction Time increases logarithmically with the number of choices. Going from 1 to 2 options adds ~58% to reaction time. This is why feints work - they increase your opponent's cognitive load.

The Pruner Strategy

Elite fighters "chunk" multiple threats into single categories. Instead of treating jab, cross, and hook as 3 separate threats (log₂(3) = 1.58 bits), they categorize them as "linear attacks" (1 bit), dramatically reducing reaction time.

Typical Reaction Times:

  • Simple RT: 180-250ms (elite martial artists)
  • Choice RT (2 options): 250-400ms
  • Complex RT (4+ options): 400-700ms
  • Elite punch speed: 100-150ms (faster than reaction!)
